*Credits to wikipedia.org*
Main Characters:
Ichigo Kurosaki
Age: 15 (series start), 16 (current)
Gender: Male
Species: Human, shinigami, vizard
Date of birth: July 15
Occupation: High school student, deputy shinigami
Known relatives: Isshin Kurosaki (father)
Masaki Kurosaki (mother, deceased)
Yuzu Kurosaki (sister)
Karin Kurosaki (sister)
Zanpakutō: Zangetsu
Ichigo is a 15-year-old who attempts to cultivate a detached image, for which he keeps his eyebrows constantly furrowed. Ichigo has natural orange hair, a fact that annoys many upperclassmen in his school, who constantly pick fights with him. Ichigo claims that he does not care what others think (both about his hair and other subjects) and seems to enjoy fighting the bullies.
Ichigo is also a capable student, ranked at 23 of 322 in his school. Ichigo regularly studies and doesn't neglect his schoolwork, due to the fact that he has nothing better to do at home. It is later revealed that Ichigo works so hard only to overcome the misconceptions that many teachers tend to have about him, based on his hair color and interactions with other students.
Ichigo possesses the unusual ability to see spirits as a consequence of his innate spiritual power. After the full extent of Ichigo's immense spiritual power is unlocked as a consequence of his meeting with Rukia Kuchiki, as well as his subsequent inability to control it, many of his friends begin to develop spiritual powers due to their proximity with him. Frequent exposure to Ichigo's energy causes several of his classmates to become spiritually aware, and some even develop their own unique powers as a result.
Ichigo lives with his father Isshin Kurosaki and his two younger sisters, Yuzu and Karin. His father runs a small medical clinic in their house, and recruits the entire family in his business. While Ichigo's father is portrayed as a comical, inept character who often challenges his son with mock attacks and berates him for being late for dinner, Karin also has the ability to see spirits and Yuzu acts as the de facto mother of the family.
Ichigo likes chocolate and karashi mentaiko. His favorite celebrities are Al Pacino and Mike Ness and the person he admires most is William Shakespeare. He is uncomfortable around nude or immodestly dressed women despite the "tough guy" image he tries to maintain.
Ichigo's name, written with homophone kanji, means 1 and 5 when separated as ichi (一) and go (五), the reason behind the two numbers' frequent appearances in the series. The word ichigo (苺/イチゴ), written in yet another way, actually means "strawberry" in Japanese, and is normally only used as a girl's name; when the gatekeeper Jidanbō teases Ichigo about this fact, Ichigo proudly states that his name is spelled with ichi (一) as in "one" and go (護) from "guardian". Ichigo's father once told him that his name means "he who protects."
Rukia Kuchiki
Gender: Female
Species: Shinigami
Date of birth: January 14[1]
Occupation: Shinigami in the 13th Division
Known relatives: Hisana Kuchiki (sister, deceased), Byakuya Kuchiki (brother-in-law, adoptive brother)
Zanpakutō: Sode no Shirayuki
Initially born into a lower class, Rukia retains her modesty even as an adopted member of the nobility: she is graceful and "clean", yet chooses to talk to ordinary people. Although she tells Ichigo that she is nearly ten times older than he, she is endearingly clueless about the ways of the modern living world (since Soul Society resembles Japan's Edo period). She is initially unable to figure out a simple juice box, and learns to speak modern Japanese through the manga she reads. According to Tite Kubo, when (in book five) the semester final exam scores were announced, Rukia's rank was 302 out of 322. With the exception of Japanese, she failed most of her exams.
Rukia is an accomplished actress, being able to act her way through a number of tough situations, such as getting out of trouble with school teachers or managing to get a room at Ichigo's house much to his embarrassment that his own family would fall for such a lame act. Ichigo seems to be the only one to always pick up on it and accuse her of pretending. She also seems to enjoy drawing (albeit horribly); her drawings of people and hollows seem to resemble rabbits and teddy bears, respectively. Rukia's inability to draw well (and her taking offense when told as much) is a running gag in the series. Rukia loves Chappy the Rabbit (and basically anything rabbit-themed) and is rather put out when she is unable to obtain Chappy Soul Candy because of its popularity in Soul Society (although she is able to obtain it during the Arrancar arc). She also likes to climb to high places and her favorite foods are cucumbers and shira-tama (but the list could get longer).
In the Bount arc, Ririn, one of the modsouls that Urahara invented, is jealous of Rukia's familiarity with Ichigo, while Rukia instantly takes a liking to Kuroud, who resembles Chappy the Rabbit in his plushie form. This makes Kon break down and start crying, as he believes that no one, meaning Rukia, likes him anymore.
Her attitude towards Ichigo varies throughout the series. At times, she is a bickering adversary, and at other times, she worries about him and dispatches advice like a wise old sage. Most of their scenes together have them yelling and making faces at each other. Despite these quarrels, the two have a deep understanding of each other, often being the only ones able to talk each other out of a funk.
There is a deeply serious side to Rukia as well, best shown during the time she was taken back to Soul Society for giving her powers to Ichigo. In her time in Soul Society, which she spent in various holding cells, she is constantly seen resigned to her fate or in deep thought. She and Ichigo also have similar feelings of loss and guilt. Ichigo thought he was responsible for his mother's death and Rukia's near execution. Rukia thought she was responsible for the death of one of her commanding officers, Kaien Shiba, and considered Ichigo's apparent death her fault.
Inoue Orihime
Age: 15-16(current)
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Date of birth: September 3
Occupation: High school student
Known relatives: Sora Inoue (brother, deceased)
Weapon: Shun Shun Rikka, (hairclips)
Orihime Inoue has long orange-brown hair which she wears with the bangs behind her ears and hairpins. She does not remove her hairpins, except to sleep (she is seen without them in episode 64 when she wakes up), as they are worn in memory of her brother, while her hair is worn long in honor of the promise Tatsuki Arisawa once made to protect her. Her large breasts are occasionally made the subject of jokes in the series. She also has an amazingly hard head, which has injured Uryū, Chad, and Ichigo. The only person who has been able to damage her head has been Yachiru Kusajishi in a comical moment when she is riding on Kenpachi Zaraki's shoulders. Orihime has brown eyes in color pictures of the manga, but gray eyes in the anime.
Orihime is friendly, humorous in her own way, sensitive, and kind. She comes off as naive and rather clueless, which is at odds with her exceptionally high marks in school. Apparently, she is hopeless when it comes to technology. One of the members of the Handicrafts' Club remarks that she is not smart enough to use a cell phone, which is why she does not have one. Additionally, according to Tatsuki, Orihime has the fighting skill of a black belt, however, in the English dubbed version she says Orihime is at the skill of a yellow belt.
Orihime cooks and eats strange food at home, although she also likes some normal food. Aside from Rangiku Matsumoto and possibly Tessai Tsukabishi, no one shares Orihime's tastes. Her favorite food is red bean paste, and she likes putting butter on sweet potatoes.
Orihime has a tendency to rush into situations without thinking, sometimes leading to embarrassing consequences. At one point, the schoolgirls ask Rukia if she has feelings for Ichigo. When Rukia denies any such thing, Orihime is disappointed that Rukia does not share her sentiments, because if she had, then it would be two girls against one boy and therefore the girls "team" would win, which makes no sense. She also tends to have an overactive imagination and gets carried away thinking of implausible scenarios, such as portraying herself as a futuristic and apparently highly destructive robot in an assignment asking "How do you see yourself in the future?", when the question refers to what occupation one wishes or believes they will have.
Orihime has also demonstrated that she is perceptive, mostly when it comes to Ichigo Kurosaki. She is in love with Ichigo, and in both the manga and anime her feelings only become more evident as time goes on. She has revealed these feelings both to Rangiku Matsumoto and to Ichigo himself, though he was asleep at the time. She also has the uncanny ability to detect Ichigo by scent and sense his spiritual pressure, even when masked by the vizard.
Through her expanding role in the manga, Orihime has become a more complex character than her earlier archetype suggested. Where Orihime was more happy and goofy at the start of the series, later arcs deal with her feelings of inadequacy and inner turmoils. She also functions as a second female lead after the Soul Society arc, which was recognized when her character was featured along with female leads from other Weekly Shonen Jump series on a special Shonen Jump cover.
Yasutora Sado
Nicknames: Chad
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Date of birth: April 7
Occupation: High school student
Weapon: Brazo Derecha de Gigante, Brazo Izquierda del Diablo
Chad is a teenager of Mexican descent. He is extremely tall and appears to be much older than he actually is. Chad has a tattoo on his left shoulder which reads Amore e Morte ("love and death" in Italian) and consists of a heart, a snake and angel wings around the heart. In the series, he is usually seen wearing either his school uniform or a tee shirt. At one point in the series, he is seen wearing a dark, long-sleeved shirt with a rose emblazoned on the left sleeve. The rose may be in honor of his grandfather seeing as how his grandfather's name was Oscar Joaquin de la Rosa, de la Rosa being Spanish for "of the Rose."
Chad is a quiet person and is sometimes the subject of jokes or bullies because he never fights back, against ordinary humans at least, since he often engages hollows and shinigami only when necessary. Nonetheless, he is treated equally within his group of friends in Karakura (Ichigo, Keigo and Mizuiro). Chad also has a weakness for cute things, like small animals and Kon, he is one of the few characters that actually treats Kon with any dignity but for the most part ignores him. To match his extraordinary size, Chad possesses extraordinary superhuman durability, even before activating his spiritual powers, being able to survive the impact of a falling steel girder on his back and a head-on motorcycle collision, and is strong enough to break telephone poles. Besides his physical strength, Chad has also shown to be very intelligent; he ranked 11th out of 322 when Ichigo ranked 23rd.
Chad likes music, but rarely watches TV. The only program he likes is Carnivore Kingdom, which starts at 8 a.m. on Sundays. He likes it so much that he bought the DVDs for it. Not surprisingly, since Kon is a cheap knock-off plushie of the main character of Carnivore Kingdom, Chad finds Kon especially cute. Chad also has a bass guitar, but has never been shown playing it. It has been shown in Chad's room in episode 69 and in the 8th anime ending sequence. It's also shown in episode 9 after a "band practice." He is also seen carrying it immediately preceding the appearance of the incomplete arrancar. Chad's favorite food is tomatoes.
Uryū Ishida
Age: 15-16(current)
Gender: Male
Species: Human (Quincy)
Date of birth: November 6
Occupation: High School Student, Quincy
Title: Heir to the title "The last Quincy"
Known relatives: Ryūken Ishida (father), Sōken Ishida (grandfather, deceased)
Weapon: Bows; Ginrei Kōjaku, Seele Schneider ( Soul Cutter )
Uryū Ishida is a black-haired, bespectacled teenager of average height. At school, Uryū wears the school uniform along with a tie, while outside he dons white Quincy clothes with blue stripes representing the Quincy cross, and a mantle.
Uryū is generally shy and quiet, but tries harder to act cool when other people are around. For example, during the Soul Society arc he wears a mantle that serves no purpose other than to make him look cooler, despite the fact that it hinders his movement. He even keeps a spare to that effect. In addition, he also has a tendency to say things with characteristic drama.
Uryū operates on a moral ethic known as the "Pride of the Quincy" and has a strong sense of justice. He has also shown to be very chivalrous, stating that he enacts justice on men who abuse or treat women badly. He demonstrates this at multiple points throughout the series, such as when he tried to defend Rukia Kuchiki from Renji Abarai when he and Byakuya Kuchiki came to the real world to take her, or when he defends Orihime Inoue at multiple points throughout the Soul Society arc. Uryū also has a tendency to not use lethal force in battle, especially if he can win without doing so. Instead, he will simply incapacitate his opponent.
Uryū does not hold his father, Ryūken Ishida, in high respect; he calls his father by his given name which is considered very rude in Japanese society. Despite this, in the anime Uryū seems mildly offended when Rukia commented that the Ishida's hospital (his father being the present director) is falling apart and Renji replies tactlessly that the hospital is only for show.
Uryū has low blood pressure and hates procrastination. The other things he hates are quite odd: buttons (despite being an expert in sewing) and the word "haphazard." His favorite food is homemade mackerel miso stew. The television program he likes is Don Kanonji's "Bura-Rei". The shadow that jumped out of the crowd at Kanonji's first appearance was in fact Uryū. Like his grandfather, Sōken Ishida, Uryū is left-handed, and he is also a great archer, capable of insane feats of archery.

Shinigami & Ex-Shinigami
6th Division
Captain
Byakuya Kuchiki
Gender: Male
Species: Shinigami
Date of birth: January 31
Occupation: Shinigami captain of the 6th Division
Title 28th Head of the Kuchiki clan
Known relatives: Hisana Kuchiki (wife, deceased), Rukia Kuchiki (sister-in-law, adopted sister)
Zanpakutō Senbonzakura
Byakuya Kuchiki is the 28th head of the noble Kuchiki clan, one of the four great noble families in Soul Society. As such, Byakuya acts in an aristocratic manner — he seems always serene and apathetic towards other people, even when he is actually deeply conflicted.
Byakuya strongly believes in law and order. As the head of one of the great noble families and as a captain in the Gotei 13, he always works hard for a peaceful society. He feels that if someone in his position doesn't follow the rules as a good example, then no one will follow them. He believes that to maintain the order, all law-breakers must be punished, even if that goes against his own wishes. In spite of his icy and regal manner, Byakuya cares for and protects those important to him.
Byakuya is popular among the female shinigami of Soul Society, and was voted number one in the "captain we desire to release a photo book for" poll taken by the Shinigami Women's Association. He likes Chinese bellflowers, night time walks, and spicy food.
Byakuya wears the standard captain uniform along with a white headpiece called a kenseikan (symbolizing his noble rank as the head of the Kuchiki family) and a white scarf made by the master weaver, Tsujishirō Kuroemon III. The scarf is made from silver-white windflower light silk (ginpaku kazahana no uzuginu) and is a family heirloom handed down through the generations to the head of the Kuchiki family. Ten large houses can be built for the cost of just one such scarf.
Byakuya seems to have a comedic side to himself as he not only attends the Vice-Captain's meeting when Renji Abarai is absent, but also attends the meetings of the Shinigami Women's Association when Rukia is absent. As he puts it, "part of a captain's responsibilities is to make sure the vice-captain's responsibilities are taken care of" which was spoken during the Shinigami's Illustrated Picture Book in episode 118, to which Renji asks him if he also goes to Rukia's meetings which is only responded by a smile. In the Shinigami Cup in episode 113, Byakuya jokingly remarks that he uses Senbonzakura to cut his hair. In one of the omake chapters, Byakuya claims that life in general isn't supposed to be entertaining, and even makes up an idea for a game that isn't meant to be amusing. It was also shown in an omake chapter that Byakuya has a similar drawing style to Rukia.
He was married to Hisana who died of a disease fifty years before the main storyline. As she was a commoner, Byakuya was strongly admonished against marrying her, but did so out of love, thus disobeying the rules of the Kuchiki noble house. She was the older sister of Rukia Kuchiki in their past lives, and both were sent to Inuzuri (a poor district of Rukongai) where Hisana abandoned her sister, unable to support both herself and the infant Rukia. Hisana later greatly regretted this decision, even in her final moments, and searched for her every day during her marriage to Byakuya. In accordance with Hisana's dying wish, Byakuya adopted Rukia as his sister, disobeying the rules a second time. She and Rukia are very similar in appearance.
Lt.
Renji Abarai
Gender: Male
Species: Shinigami
Date of birth: August 31
Occupation: Shinigami lieutenant of the 6th Division
Zanpakutō: Zabimaru
Renji is one of the more unusual characters in Bleach in terms of his appearance, long crimson hair, usually kept in a high ponytail, and his entire upper body is covered in tribal tattoo work. How he got these tattoos is unknown, but it appears that with every achievement Renji attains, his tattoos increase as well, starting from his early days as a shinigami candidate until when he was imprisoned by Byakuya Kuchiki (his tattoos cover his entire back at this point of time). He dresses in the standard shinigami outfit, though he usually includes some sort of elaborate headgear (usually expensive-looking glasses or a white headband). All of Renji's sunglasses are from Seireitei's popular "Silver Dragonfly Glasses Store" and cost half a year's worth of his paycheck. Unfortunately, every time he wears a pair, they are broken in one way or another (usually in a fight with Ichigo). He likes taiyaki (a popular fish-shaped pancake usually filled with sweet bean paste) and dislikes spicy food.
As far as his personality goes, Renji is about as eccentric as any other shinigami. He varies from smug and cocky in his first appearances to downright angsty and depressed after his major defeats, but shows himself to be an incredibly serious and determined fighter when confronted with an actual challenge. Renji harbours deep affections for Rukia Kuchiki. This is proved numerous times throughout the story, particularly during his flashback of his youth with Rukia in Rukongai. Willing to fight, kill, and die for whatever he believes in, Renji is a dangerous man to those who stand in his way. He is much like Ichigo Kurosaki in many respects, and the two are mistaken for brothers in the anime's Bount arc. Ichigo claims they are cousins to keep things simple, allowing many hilarious situations to occur later.
Renji Abarai came from the 78th district of Rukongai and grew up as an orphan with several other children, including Rukia Kuchiki. The company of children lived by stealing or hunting for food. Though Renji and Rukia quickly discovered they had spiritual powers, they remained with their friends until they all died, which prompted them to become shinigami for a better life.
At the shinigami academy, Renji was admitted into the top class, being very adept at swordsmanship, although quite inept at kidō. His senpai was Shūhei Hisagi. At the academy, Renji befriended Izuru Kira and Momo Hinamori, who each proceeded to become lieutenants. His relationship with Rukia became distant after her adoption by the Kuchiki family since he felt he had no place interfering with her life now that she was a noble, despite the fact they both seemed to regret losing the company and confidence of the other.
Renji, Kira and Hinamori served under Sōsuke Aizen and Gin Ichimaru in the 5th division, after which Kira and Hinamori were put under Ichimaru and Aizen in the 3rd and 5th divisions respectively. The rebellious Renji was moved to the 11th Division and eventually rose to the 6th seat. During his time in the 11th Division, he befriended Ikkaku Madarame, who taught Renji how to fight. It was also shown that Renji was aware that Ikkaku had a bankai, but refused to use it to train Renji. On the same day Rukia headed for the human world, Renji was promoted to lieutenant of the 6th Division. After meeting Byakuya Kuchiki, the 6th Division's captain, Renji's greatest dream has been to surpass him in strength.
10th Division
Captain
Tōshirō Hitsugaya
Nicknames: Shiro-chan (lit. "Whitey")
Gender: Male
Species: Shinigami
Date of birth: December 20
Occupation: Shinigami captain of the 10th Division
Zanpakutō Hyōrinmaru
Tōshirō Hitsugaya is very young by Soul Society standards. Born in Rukongai, he became the youngest ever to reach captain rank. Thus, he is called a "boy genius" by many. He is short (because of his age) and has white hair, which tends to draw attention in the human world. He wears standard captain's clothing, save for a green sash around his shoulders, and sometimes walks around in his tabi; however, he is the only shinigami that carries his zanpakutō on his back aside from Ichigo Kurosaki, whose zanpakutō necessitates such a style. Hitsugaya's short stature and the blade's length may explain the similar style. His sheath dissolves whenever he draws his sword.
Hitsugaya is generally mature and serious, in contrast to his free-spirited lieutenant, Rangiku Matsumoto. Despite their philosophical differences, he and Rangiku seem to be very close. Hitsugaya is shown to also be easily annoyed by others goofing off or drawing unneeded attention to themselves, as shown when he led a team of shinigami into Ichigo Kurosaki's school. Hitsugaya hates anything that he deems childish and hates being described as something close to a child, an elementary school child for example, a further contrast to his appearance. This is more shown in the omake chapters of Bleach, such as the short comics in VJump and the sand castle contest chapter released along with chapter 238. He is also mistaken for a kid in several of the omake chapters, much to his annoyance. During the ending credits of Sealed Sword Frenzy, he was in the human world and dressed in a young boy's school uniform, and Hinamori had to practically drag him out of hiding. He is overly protective of Momo Hinamori, due to fact that they were old childhood friends. Hitsugaya dislikes summer and warm weather in general.
Hitsugaya is easily annoyed when anyone (especially Momo Hinamori) refers to him by anything other than his title, Captain Hitsugaya. Hinamori has called him by "Hitsugaya-kun," and both she and Ukitake have occasionally used "Shiro-chan" (シロちゃん) — a nickname meaning "Whitey" (Snowy in the English manga) in reference to his hair — in both cases without repercussion, however. In the Shinigami Golden Cup sketches (omakes found at the end of episodes of Bleach), Jūshirō Ukitake comically gives Hitsugaya candy and other food because "Jūshirō" and "Tōshirō" sound similar and because they both have white hair, making them both "Shiro-chan." The first character in Hitsugaya's given name, Tōshirō, means "winter," which is appropriate given his white hair and ice type zanpakutō. Ichigo also calls Hitsugaya by his given name, much to Hitsugaya's annoyance despite his protests, making him one of three captains Ichigo refers to in this manner (the others being Byakuya Kuchiki and Kenpachi Zaraki).
Hitsugaya's intuition is extremely sharp, and he is one of few captains to correctly suspect Gin Ichimaru of foul play, though he understandably didn't suspect Sōsuke Aizen of the same.
During his duel with Gin Ichimaru in the anime, Ichimaru remarks that Hitsugaya is the embodiment of a heavenly guardian that would be reincarnated once in a while. This is attributed to his given name, which is a homonym for a casual Japanese term meaning "amateur" (藤四郎), possibly referring to Hitsugaya's young age and inexperience relative to the other captains of the Gotei 13.
Lt.
Rangiku Matsumoto
Gender: Female
Species: Shinigami
Date of birth: September 29
Occupation: Shinigami lieutenant of the 10th Division
Zanpakutō: Haineko
Rangiku is an attractive woman with long, wavy, strawberry-blonde hair (worn short in her youth) and icy blue eyes. Her most distinctive features are her extremely large breasts, which are even larger than Orihime Inoue's. She also shares Orihime's strange taste in food. She dresses in the garb typical of shinigami, though her robes hang loose enough for her ample bosom to be revealed. She wears a necklace and a pink scarf over her arms. In addition, her lieutenant's armband is worn on her uniform's sash, as opposed to around the arm.
Rangiku tends to be a slacker who doesn't like paperwork and loves to drink saké. She's not the least bit modest about her appearance, frequently referring or complaining about her large breasts in casual conversation. She even tries to bribe Ichigo Kurosaki into letting her stay at his house using them, though unsuccessfully. Her easy-going and free-spirited personality is in sharp contrast with the serious Hitsugaya, but the two seem to be quite close, regardless. Rangiku is almost constantly by his side and has shown her loyalty to him on several occasions. While she seems somewhat self-centered, she is sensitive to the feelings of others, evident when she sees the concern Hitsugaya has for Momo Hinamori, the guilt Izuru Kira shares with her when Gin Ichimaru is revealed as a traitor, and when Orihime feels depressed about her role in Ichigo Kurosaki's life. Despite her lackadaisical image, she can be extremely serious when needed. She's shown to be somewhat maternal, especially with Orihime and Momo.
2nd Division
Captain
Soi Fon
Gender: Female
Species: Shinigami
Date of birth: February 11th
Occupation: Shinigami captain of the 2nd Division; commander of the special forces; former bodyguard of Yoruichi Shihouin
Zanpakutō: Suzumebachi
Soifon is staunchly loyal, firm, and unbending in her beliefs. She is a hard worker and takes a strong moral stand — she particularly believes in following orders. She is generally reserved and not arrogant like her lieutenant. She will not hesitate in the slightest to strike down even her subordinates if they stand in her way. Soifon, like most female shinigami, is a member of the Shinigami Women's Association. In a V-Jump comic, she and Kiyone Kotetsu manage to pin Jūshirō Ukitake to a post in order to snap pictures of him for the association's calendar.
Underneath her standard shinigami captain uniform, Soifon wears the special forces leader's uniform, which has no sleeves or covering for the back. Her hair is worn short with two long braids covered in cloth.
A running gag in Bleach, mainly in the omake chapters, is Soifon's obsession and admiration for Yoruichi Shihouin, the former leader of the special forces. She also seems to like anything that resembles a black cat, which is Yoruichi's preferred form. During a Valentine's Day omake, Soifon tries to give Yoruichi a heart-shaped box of chocolate, but fails to when Yoruichi switches to her feline form. In another omake chapter, the Gotei 13 are asked to give ideas for a shinigami video game. Soifon suggests a game with herself and Yoruichi as the main characters. During a meeting of the Shinigami's Woman Association, Soifon suggests that they start using a cellphone that has a direct single line to Yoruichi so she can "talk to Yoruichi-sama as much as she wants." During Soifon's momentary visit to the real world, she expresses dismay at Yoruichi's living conditions at the Urahara Shop and comments to Kisuke Urahara that if anything happens to Yoruichi she will make him pay. In episode 117, Soifon is seen fawning over pictures of Yoruichi - even one where she's eating like a glutton. Also, during the credits for the OVA "The Sealed Sword Frenzy", after Yoruichi walks away with Urahara, Soifon is seen staring at the couple, her hand in a fist and her face irritated.
Lt.
Marechiyo Ōmaeda
Marechiyo Ōmaeda (大前田 希千代, Ōmaeda Marechiyo?) is the lieutenant of the 2nd Division, under Captain Soifon. He is a large man with an equally large mouth who comes across as arrogant and dull. His skill level as a shinigami remains unknown, however, it is thought that he received his position as lieutenant because of his family's connections. He also seems to be a coward. He likes to eat fried rice crackers (油せんべい, abura senbei?) wherever he is. His captain has been known to beat him up when crumbs from the crackers fall on her hair.
In an omake in the manga, Marechiyo is shown to come from a rich family. As is typical of many rich families, he has a long name, Marechiyo Yoshiayamenosuke Nikkōtarōemon Ōmaeda (大前田 日光田郎右衛門 美菖蒲介 希千代, Ōmaeda Nikkōtarōemon Yoshiayamenosuke Marechiyo?). His father is named Marenoshin (希ノ進, Marenoshin?), his mother is Mareka (希華, Mareka?), his older sister is Maremi (希美, Maremi?), his younger brother is Marejirōsaburō (希次郎三郎, Marejirōsaburō?), and his younger sister is Mareyo (希代, Mareyo?). With the exception of his younger sister, all closely resemble him. Mareyo is more normal looking and sweet, which shocks Izuru Kira, Renji Abarai, and Shūhei Hisagi (these three are replaced by Ichigo and Rukia in the anime's equivalent sketch). Marechiyo thinks his younger sister is ugly.
Marechiyo's zanpakutō is Gegetsuburi (五形頭, Gegetsuburi? lit. "Five-form Head", Viz: "Five Heads"). It is a normal katana in its sealed state. Its shikai command is "smash" (打っ潰せ, buttsubuse?, Viz: "crush"). In its shikai, Gegetsuburi transforms into an oversized spiked ball and chain. Its special abilities, if any, are unknown, as he is quickly dispatched by Ichigo Kurosaki during his first activation of it. It doesn't seem to be particularly sturdy, as Ichigo was able to shatter the spiked ball with a single, barehanded punch; however, considering that Ichigo is capable of fighting on par with captain-level shinigami, this may not be indicative of its actual strength.

11th Division
Captain
Kenpachi Zaraki
Gender: Male
Date of birth: November 19
Occupation: Shinigami
Title Captain of the 11th Division
Zanpakutō: Unknown
Kenpachi has a wild and aggressive appearance, fitting with his personality. He wears his captain's jacket without sleeves, and with a more ragged look to it (he acquired his captain's jacket from the previous 11th Division captain, whom he defeated and killed in a duel). He styles his hair into spikes with bells at the tips and wears a special eye patch on his right eye created by the 12th Division to absorb the bulk of his power. Both of these are meant to give enemies an advantage so that he can have even fights with weaker opponents. He has a huge scar on the left side of his face (He apparently had this same scar around the time he found Yachiru). He is also one of the tallest characters in Bleach, towering at 202 cm (approx. 6 ft 7½ in). This is slightly taller than Yasutora Sado and almost double the height of his lieutenant, Yachiru Kusajishi. His stature is often exaggerated even more for dramatic purposes, especially in contrast with Yachiru's.
In the "Shinigami Cup" special after Bleach episode 71, Kenpachi is shown attaching the bells to his hair, which apparently takes quite a while to accomplish. The highest bell in particular takes him several hours to attach, as the tip of his hair is just beyond his reach. Occasionally, Yumichika will offer to do it, but Zaraki usually refuses because he thinks that it is weird for someone else to style his hair. Tite Kubo has remarked that Zaraki's hair is the most difficult to draw, tied with Kaname Tōsen's.
Despite his initial introduction as a lethal foe, Kenpachi later begins to play the role of the comical anti-hero in Bleach: though still self-centered and violent, his actions tend to be for the best and his relationship with his division and others is always portrayed comically. This comical shift is primarily centered around his appearances in the Bleach anime and omake stories, with the exception of the occasional diatribe between himself and Yachiru. He is usually depicted as having a very poor sense of direction, asking his lieutenant Yachiru for directions (who then randomly points in a direction).
Kenpachi lives for battle (evidenced by his method of attaining his rank) and enjoys a good fight more than anything. He even weakens himself in an effort to make any fight last longer. He also claims that injury and death are nothing but the price one pays for a good fight. Despite his group being the most bloodthirsty of the Gotei 13, they have a code of ethics, though different from the set rules of Soul Society.
Despite his seeming disregard for any strategy in his fights and his self-admitted aversion to thinking during battle, Kenpachi is adept at finding and exploiting weaknesses in his opponents' techniques, such as in his battle with Kaname Tōsen. Apart from his sword skills, he has shown no overt talent in any other forms of shinigami combat; even flash steps, a common skill among most shinigami, are never used by him. However, his overall speed and ferociousness in battle more than make up for his seeming lack of ability in these areas. While he admits to having no sanity or common sense, Kenpachi is actually very perceptive and notices traits in people that others wouldn't notice. For example, he correctly singles out Kaname Tōsen and Gin Ichimaru as the only captains who are afraid to die.
Perhaps due to years of combat experience and time on the battlefield, Kenpachi also has a large degree of physical strength, most clearly evidenced by the fact that he kicked Tōsen through a building in their battle, and also when he grabbed Ichigo's giant sword barehanded and reeled both him and the sword in for an attack. His physical strength is matched by his endurance: Kenpachi has been shown to easily ignore most of the injuries he's sustained in battle, not suffering any debilitation despite having multiple slash wounds in his body. Ichigo was unable to even scratch him early on in their fight, causing more damage to himself than Zaraki. He even allowed himself to be stabbed just to grab Tōsen's blade and break his bankai's effect.
Though he literally lives for battle, Kenpachi has shown human emotion and caring for two things: his lieutenant Yachiru (who is possibly the only person he cares for, though he has shown to care about Ikkaku and Yumichika) and his name, which he gave himself. Following his battle with Ichigo, in a rare moment of sorrow, Kenpachi talks about the pain of not having a name (as he lived his childhood and early adult years without one), and feels guilty that his sword isn't acknowledged by its name.
Kenpachi also strongly believes the fun comes before working. In every battle, he tries to get as much enjoyment out of it as possible. He also sent his 5th Seat, Yumichika, to fend off the Bount in Karakura Town, as he was the only high-ranking officer who wasn't busy, or rather, busy having fun, as Yachiru was snacking and Ikkaku was napping, while Yumichika was organizing documents.
At times it seems Kenpachi contradicts his own logic, as he on one hand wishes for ever increasing personal power, yet on the other restricts his might and stubbornly refuses to learn the name of his zanpakutō. Insane to a certain extent, Kenpachi is easily one of the most complex characters in the series, as he exhibits a wide range of traits including; reckless abandon, blood lust, peculiar sentiments of affection toward his subordinates, and even the occasional indication of wisdom in the form of terse pep-talks usually given to opponents just before or even during battles. All these factors parallel Ichigo's character giving insight to the inward struggle he seems to contend with.
Lt.
Yachiru Kusajishi
Yachiru can be described as very cute and innocent in appearance. She has short pink hair and is quite small. She also likes to give people nicknames. She calls another member of the 11th Division "Maki-maki" (meaning rolled rolled), a humourous nickname. She is usually found latched onto the back of her captain, Zaraki. She is cheerful, energetic, upbeat and surprisingly intimidating at times, especially when annoyed. Like Zaraki, she has no sense of direction. She is also physically stronger than she looks. She has a special bond to her Captain Zaraki Kenpachi, lost in a troublesome state where blood was the only color seen, Yachiru than a lil toddler was on her own in the midst of blood and war. It was Zaraki who found her ..took her with him and gave her a name.
3rd Seat
Ikkaku Madarame
Gender: Male
Species: Shinigami
Date of birth: November 9
Occupation: Shinigami 3rd Seat of the 11th Division
Zanpakutō: Hōzukimaru
Ikkaku is bald, a fact that is made fun of by many. The 11th Division lieutenant, Yachiru Kusajishi, calls him either "cue-ball" or "pachinko head", a result of her fondness for giving people nicknames or when he questions her direction skills. As a result of the constant ridicule he gets, Ikkaku is very self-conscious about his baldness, to the point where he will threaten anyone that points it out. Ikkaku's bald scalp is reflective, which causes members of the 8th and 11th Divisions to mistake it as a full moon in one of the anime's omake segments, much to Ikkaku's annoyance. He also has distinctive small red markings near his eyes. Unlike most shinigami, he doesn't wear tabi with his sandals.
Despite being ranked as 3rd seat officer in his division, his rank does not reflect his fighting abilities, which are of captain level. According to Yumichika Ayasegawa, Ikkaku is the 2nd strongest man in the 11th Division.[2] It is unclear whether this explicitly means that he is stronger than any other male in the division (excluding Kenpachi) or whether he is the second strongest person in the division (surpassing Yachiru, its lieutenant). Ikkaku has even achieved the bankai of his zanpakutō, putting him at a level beyond most of Soul Society's lieutenants. Ikkaku intentionally hides this fact from everyone, with the exception of those he trusts to keep it a secret. The reason he does so is to stay in the 11th Division under Kenpachi, since he believes he might be promoted or forced into becoming a captain if anyone else knew.
In terms of attitude, Ikkaku is a stereotypical 11th Division member — violent, fight-loving, and rude; this has been noted by Tetsuzaemon Iba, among others. He loves fighting so much that he is unwilling to travel anywhere without a sword, resorting to carrying a wooden one when posing as a student at Ichigo's school. He does have a sense of loyalty and responsibility, however, unlike many of the lower-ranked 11th Division members. Ikkaku is fiercely loyal to Kenpachi, under whose command he wants to fight and eventually die.
Ikkaku has many personality traits in common with his division's captain Kenpachi Zaraki, which is why they seem to have so much respect for one another. Ikkaku considers fighting fun and tries to get as much "fun" as he can out of his opponents, so much so that he will take deadly risks to drag out the fight for as long as possible. During a fight with a challenging opponent, he is almost constantly smiling, much like Kenpachi does. Like all 11th Division members, he considers the only honorable battles to be those fought one-on-one and even the threat of death is not a reason to ignore this fact, since as a rule the winner is only determined when the other is dead. He does consider surviving an otherwise lost battle good luck, however, he's also sensible enough to carry a blood-clotting ointment in the hilt of his zanpakutō.
Ikkaku is one of the few characters in Bleach that is referred to by their given name instead of their family name, a rarity in Bleach but seemingly more common amongst the 11th Division. Only Makizō Aramaki and Tōshirō Hitsugaya have called him Madarame so far. As an odd side note, Ikkaku appears to be one of only two Bleach characters who are left handed, the other being Uryū Ishida. It's equally possible he's ambidextrous, as he switches to his right hand during his battle with the arrancar Edrad Leones and uses his sword sheath as a secondary weapon in battle.
5th Seat
Yumichika Ayasegawa
Gender: Male
Species: Shinigami
Date of birth: September 19
Occupation: Shinigami
Title 5th Seat of the 11th Division.
Zanpakutō Fuji Kujaku
Yumichika is a complete narcissist who thinks of himself as the embodiment of beauty and judges everyone and everything based on his perception of their beauty, or lack thereof. He even chose his seat position based on its perceived beauty: he thinks that the number four (四) doesn't look beautiful, preferring the number three (三). Since the third seat was taken by his friend Ikkaku Madarame, Yumichika instead opted for seat number five (五), which he thinks resembles three.[1] He has colorful feathers on his eyelashes and eyebrow. In the manga, especially the early chapters, Yumichika is drawn with rather shiny skin and hair (as much as black and white can reproduce the effect) and somewhat womanly in appearance, although this is not seen to the same extent in the anime. Yumichika is also incredibly vain; when a run-in with Ganju Shiba (whom Yumichika can never remember because "it is not in [his] nature to remember ugly faces") and his arsenal of firework leaves him with an afro, Yumichika dons a wig until his hair is back to normal. Yumichika sometimes tries to do Kenpachi Zaraki's hair for him in the morning because it can take him a long time, but Kenpachi always refuses, thinking the idea is gross.
Though shallow and annoyingly arrogant at first glance, Yumichika is a reliable and strong opponent in battle. He deeply respects his close friend Ikkaku as well as his captain, Kenpachi, although his mannerisms sometimes disturb or annoy them. Despite his vanity, he loves to fight, as do all members of the 11th Division. He does make a point of changing his clothes after a battle, though. Despite being only a 5th seat officer, he is capable of fighting at a level at or beyond most lieutenants[2] thanks to his zanpakutō's ability to drain other's spirit energy, which leaves them unable to fight. He only uses this ability when no one else is around, however, because such zanpakutō types are considered taboo amongst the brawl-happy 11th Division. This leaves his captain rather confused, since Yumichika always returns from battle not only completely unharmed, but usually in better condition than when he left.

Yoruichi Shihouin
Gender: Female
Species: Shinigami, Transforms into a cat
Date of birth: January 1st
Occupation: Ex-commander of the shinigami special forces
Title 22nd head of the Shihōin clan
Yoruichi Shihouin is a dark-skinned woman who can transform into a black cat for long periods of time. She is intelligent and witty, and is intimately knowledgeable of Soul Society and its workings, as she was the former leader of the special forces. Although of noble birth, she acts differently from other nobles. For instance, she instructed Soifon to refer to her without using honorific suffixes. She also transforms into her human form directly in front of Ichigo on several occasions just to see his reaction to seeing her naked.
Yoruichi tends to avoid battles, preferring to help after a fight is over, but she will step in if she thinks her side cannot win. She was responsible for training Chad and Orihime prior to their entrance into Soul Society. She also supervised Ichigo Kurosaki's bankai training using the methods developed by Kisuke Urahara.
According to Tite Kubo, the author of Bleach, Yoruichi prefers to drink milk, which fits with her practice of transforming into a cat most of the time.
Yoruichi was the former head of the special forces. She was also the first female and the 22nd generational head of the Shihouin family (天賜兵装番, tenshiheisōban?), one of the four noble families, and earned much respect in Soul Society while she was there. While her age has not been revealed, she refers to Byakuya Kuchiki as "Little Byakuya", implying that she is older than him. About 100 years prior to the Bleach storyline, she helped Kisuke Urahara in his escape from Soul Society and was thus relieved of her high status. Yoruichi and Urahara are close friends, as they played together daily under the Sōkyoku hill training space, which Urahara built when they were children, although many incorrectly believe them to be family.
While Yoruichi was the special forces commander, she took in Soifon as a guard and became her mentor and friend. She taught Soifon most of the techniques she knew. As a result, Soifon succeeded her as head of the special forces after Yoruichi's escape from Soul Society.
Since her departure from Soul Society, it has been stated that she "has kept her distance from battle." According to the manga, Yoruichi disappeared over 100 years before the storyline, but did not fight for 100 years. Her segregation from fighting seems to be the main reason for Yoruichi's initial struggle during her fight with Soifon after she returns to Soul Society.
Kisuke Urahara
Gender: Male
Species: Shinigami
Date of birth: December 31
Occupation: Owner of the Urahara Shop; former shinigami captain of the 12th Division; founder and former president of the Shinigami Research Institute
Zanpakutō: Benihime
Kisuke Urahara always wears traditional Japanese wooden sandals and a bucket hat, which has earned him the nickname "sandal-hat" (ゲタ帽子, geta-bōshi?, "Mr. Hat-and-Clogs" in the English version). He is generally a laid-back, jovial fellow, although he can be dead serious when the situation warrants it. Despite his carefree attitude, his speech is always polite, though it is sometimes sarcastic. He can also seem serious, but his tone doesn't seem so. Yoruichi Shihouin notes that he tends to go over the top with whatever he becomes passionate about. He once described himself as a "mere honest, handsome, perverted businessman." During the Bount arc of the anime, when Ganju Shiba calls Kisuke an "old man," Kisuke replies that he is the same age as Ganju's sister, Kūkaku Shiba.
Kisuke can usually be found near the scene of an important event, most of the time when it's a bit too late, but will rarely step in to intervene, preferring to be in control from outside. After the event is over (i.e. the battle between Ichigo Kurosaki and Renji Abarai), he kindly pops up and helps the side he deems fit. Thus far, it has tended to be the side of the protagonists. He often knows more than he reveals and tends to have some form of relationship with most of the story's characters. While he is a major driving force throughout much of the story, he is usually only the catalyst, making others to do the work for him. Despite his appearance, Kisuke is an extremely skilled fighter, using a combination of powerful attacks and cunning deceptions, and has been capable of toying with Yammy, an Espada-level arrancar, with nothing more than his shikai. He also likes building large underground training spaces in secret. He built the first one under the Sōkyoku hill in Soul Society with Yoruichi for their training, and created a second one under his shop in the mortal realm for a similar purpose.
12th Division
Captain
Mayuri Kurotsuchi
Gender: Male
Date of birth: March 30
Occupation: Shinigami
Title Captain of the 12th Division
2nd president of the Shinigami Research Institute
Known relatives: Nemu Kurotsuchi (daughter)
Zanpakutō: Ashisogi Jizō
Mayuri Kurotsuchi is a researcher and personifies the stereotype of the mad scientist. In the earlier episodes of the anime, he is displayed as one of the most sadistic and cruel characters in the series. He sees everyone and everything not as a living being, but as an object to be researched—including himself. He has little respect or regard for most others, and was even willing to turn his own men (who were not aware of his plans) into human bombs in an attempt to capture Uryū Ishida and Orihime Inoue for experimentation, and also withheld vital information about the Bount from the other shinigami in order to capture one as a research subject for himself.
Mayuri's appearance has a very skeletal look to it with a skull-like visage, giving him the most inhuman appearance of any human character to fit with his research experiments. His fingernails are blue, and except for the fingernail on his right middle finger, are all short. The one long fingernail is as long as the finger itself. In the anime, Mayuri is revealed to have blue hair and yellow eyes when unmasked. He also wears a white hat with two ends that point to his right and a large purple scarf around his neck. It appears his physical modifications become undone each time he reconstitutes himself, although he is heavily scarred and his ears appear to be permanently removed.
Mayuri's new appearance.Mayuri has performed various experiments on himself, some of which include upgrading certain body parts to function as weapons or giving him otherwise useful abilities. His left arm can extend out like a grappling hook and he is able to pull part of his ear out to form a scythe attached to a rope-like ligament for use as a kusarigama. He can also blend into his environment with some sort of covering that flakes away once he reveals himself.
In case he is defeated, Mayuri is able to transform into a liquid blob-like entity, unable to be attacked or attack, by stabbing himself with his zanpakutō. He is later able to reconstitute himself, at which point his wounds are healed. This ability is related to the bankai of his zanpakutō. Shortly after he uses this particular ability, Nemu thanks Uryū for not shooting him through the head (a chest wound being the prompt for its use), implying that anything less would be incapable of killing him. Alternatively, she may have simply been referring to the quickest method of death he could inflict, as any wound preventing him from stabbing himself would prevent use of the ability.
Mayuri seems to be one of the few characters in Bleach that is ambidextrous, as he wields his zanpakutō in his right hand and his scythe-ear in his left (often simultaneously). In the anime's Bount arc, he briefly wields his zanpakutō left-handed, as well.
Kurotsuchi's last name is one of the few shinigami names in Bleach which uses kanji based on the meaning of the name and not the sound. 'Kurotsuchi' means black soil (kuro - black; tsuchi - soil), as does the kanji (涅). However, the kanji's reading (pronunciation) is ne or so.
Lt.
Nemu Kurotsuchi
Nemu is the artificially created daughter of Mayuri Kurotsuchi, a combination of his research in artificial bodies (義骸, gigai?) and artificial souls (義魂, gikon?).[11] This past has driven her to become rather introverted and melancholic, preferring to stay silent in her captain's presence. Their relationship is far from the average father-daughter one, as Mayuri doesn't seem to care much for Nemu's well-being (using her as bait in combat). The most that can be said in his favor is that he has occasionally implied concern over her life as a point of personal pride in his own skill as her creator. Despite being abused and mistreated in every possible way by her captain and father, Nemu still shows great loyalty to him, and has openly expressed worry at the prospect of his death, even though she cannot explain to herself why. Her obedience seems to stem as much from her inferior rank and thorough conditioning as any kind of familial affection. Unlike her father, however, she seems to have compassion for others, saving Uryū Ishida's life as a thank you for not killing her father.
Nemu's clothes differ greatly from that of a standard shinigami. The clothes end in a mini-skirt and she wears a white obi. Along with that, her sandals have a thicker heel than most looking more like a pair of women's high heels. Nemu, despite her somewhat reticent nature, is a member of the Shinigami Women's Association. In the VJump comics, Nemu and Isane Kotetsu are sent to take pictures of Byakuya Kuchiki for the association's calendar. As the two fail, Nemu demonstrates that she is not familiar with conventional things (she says "butter" when taking pictures rather than "cheese") and attempts to take apart the camera and eat it to destroy the evidence. According to the chapter sketches in volume 25, she is also assistant vice-president of the association. When the women's association designed shinigami cell phones, the one she made was completely obscene (taking what seems to be a phallic design), enough so that it was obscured through pixilation.
Being artificially created, Nemu seems to be capable of withstanding otherwise fatal injuries; Mayuri reveals to Ishida that even when severely injured, Nemu will likely live. She also carries an antidote to some of the poisons Mayuri uses on his opponents under her lieutenant's badge; she gives some to Ishida after his battle with Mayuri. Nemu does not normally carry a zanpakutō, but she is revealed to have one in an illustration in the artbook "All Colour but the Black." Her zanpakutō takes the form of what appears to be a thin katana.
Hiyosu
Hiyosu is a department head in the Research Institute tied to the 12th division. He is a large man with a bulbous head and an extendable eyeball via a crank on his head. He was the one that originally discovered Rukia's gigai.
Akon
Akon is the second-best gigai scientist in the Research Institute. He is tall and eyebrow-less, with a jagged part in his hair. He has three short horns on his forehead. Akon was the first to realize that Rukia's gigai was created by someone working outside the laws of the Soul Society. In a "Colorful Bleach" segment, Akon and his un-named assistant, a girl with pigtails made of chains, are often shown doing various tasks like designing models for the Bleach games and making life-size figures as birthday presents on Ukitake's request.
Rin Tsubokura
Rin is a character originally created by Tite Kubo for the Bleach-Fan Japanese Bleach news site as a mascot. He regularly interacts with Ichigo's seiyū in brief video segments on the site. Later, he was brought into the manga and anime as one of Hiyosu's assistants. He has an obsession with candy and any other sort of sweets, jumping at the chance to visit the real world just to buy sweets unavailable in Soul Society. He is just as timid and simple minded as Hanatarō Yamada and Ururu Tsumugiya (ironically, both appear in the same episode along with Rin). According to Hiyosu, he usually runs and hides from any assignment and is surprised that Rin decided to accept a mission to the real world. In an episode commentary, Yumichika Ayasegawa sees him and Hanatarō as twins.
5th Division
Captain
Sōsuke Aizen
See under Bleach Characters *Bad Guy's*
Lt.
Momo Hinamori
Hinamori is an upbeat and easygoing girl who gets along with nearly everyone she meets. Hinamori is generally quite trusting, but also very impulsive and naïve. She greatly admires her former captain, Sōsuke Aizen, whom she became a shinigami just to serve under, and Hinamori refuses believing that Aizen intentionally betrayed Soul Society. Her appearance is fairly ordinary compared to other shinigami in Soul Society. She wears her hair up in a bun with a cloth wrapped around it. According to Tite Kubo, Hinamori's name was changed at the last minute; she had a completely different name in the sketch stage.[6]
Hinamori grew up in Junrinan, District 1 of Rukongai, along with Tōshirō Hitsugaya. While Hitsugaya tended to be a bit of a brat as a child and insisted that he would protect her, Hinamori found him amusing and treated him in an older sisterly fashion, and the two became close friends, with Hinamori giving him the nickname Shiro-chan (little Shiro in English Anime). When Hinamori entered the shinigami academy, she excelled at kidō. It was there that she met Kira and Renji, who soon became her friends and, later, her fellow lieutenants. They were placed in the 5th Division of the Gotei 13 under Captain Aizen and his lieutenant, Gin Ichimaru. While Kira and Renji would later leave to other Divisions, Hinamori remained in the 5th Division and became the division's lieutenant (through much hard work, as noted by Hitsugaya).
Hinamori's zanpakutō is Tobiume (飛梅, lit. flying plum tree). The command for its shikai is "snap" (弾け, hajike?).[7] In the English dub, she also adds the word "deflect," though she does it after announcing the full command phrase. When its shikai is activated, Tobiume's blade straightens and produces several jitte-like prongs along its length. In this form, Tobiume acts as a focus for Hinamori's spiritual power, concentrating it into energy bursts capable of cratering floors and breaching walls. Hinamori can also compress her power into massive energy balls and toss them from the blade's tip. In the game Bleach: Blade Battlers, Tobiume creates crimson fire instead of pink-colored energy bursts, though normally this same fire trails the blade just before she fires.

1st Division
Captain Commander
Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai
Considered to be the strongest captain in the Gotei 13, Yamamoto is depicted as an old man with a long beard. There are many scars on his torso and head, suggesting numerous battles in his past. He wears the standard shinigami captain uniform, but its size is greatly exaggerated. He also drapes his haori over his back instead of actually wearing it. Despite his old age, he has a very muscular body. As the general of Gotei 13, Yamamoto is highly respected by many shinigami, most notably Sajin Komamura, who views Yamamoto as a benefactor who saved his life. He has a fiery temper, and like fellow captains Byakuya Kuchiki and Soifon, he believes that laws must be executed for the benefit of the community and despises those who break the rules. General Yamamoto founded the shinigami academy about 2000 years before the main Bleach storyline. Yamamoto was himself a teacher at this academy, and personally instructed Kyōraku and Ukitake. He admits to being rather proud of Ukitake and Kyōraku. When they became captains, he "boasted about them as though they were his own sons." It has been revealed that he had ordered Kisuke Urahara to stabilize the Garganta gate so that captains can pass through, and has sent 4 captains so far to back up Ichigo's team.
Yamamoto's zanpakutō is Ryūjin Jakka (流刃若火, lit. Flowing Blade like Flame, Viz: Flowing Flame Blade). It is the oldest and most powerful fire-based zanpakutō, and has greater attack power than all other zanpakutō in Soul Society. In sealed form, it is disguised as Yamamoto's staff, which disintegrates into a sword on command. Its shikai command is "reduce the whole of creation to smoldering ashes" (万象一切灰燼と為せ, banshō issai kaijin to nase?, Viz: "all things of this world, turn to ashes").[1] When released, Ryūjin Jakka and the area around Yamamoto is consumed in flame. The sheer power of the flame can disintegrate almost anything the sword is waved at. Only powerful fighters such as Kyōraku and Ukitake can resist it. Even in its shikai, Ryūjin Jakka's power is enough to fight against two other captains' shikai simultaneously. His abilities as a shinigami are no doubt powerful, as he was able to bring 8th Division Lieutenant Nanao Ise to her knees and immobilize her by looking at her and releasing his spiritual pressure. He was also able to fight on par with two of the most powerful captains, Shunsui Kyōraku and Jūshirō Ukitake, for a decent period of time without any sign of injury, while they both came away with minor wounds.
Lt.
Lt.Chōjirō Sasakibe
Chōjirō Sasakibe (雀部 長次郎, Sasakibe Chōjirō?) is the lieutenant of the 1st Division. He wears a white jinbaori over his uniform and armguards. In the manga, Chōjirō is illustrated without pupils and is often assumed by fans to be blind. However, in the anime, he is animated with yellow or light brown eyes. Chōjirō's name was not revealed for quite some time after his initial appearance in the manga.
Chōjirō's zanpakutō is Gonryōmaru (厳霊丸, lit. Stern Spirit, Viz: Solemn Spirit). Its shikai command is "pierce" (穿て, ugate?, Viz: "bite"). In its shikai, Gonryōmaru transforms into a rapier, fitting with Chōjirō's appearance. Its abilities remain unknown, as Ichigo Kurosaki quickly dispatches Chōjirō the single time Chōjirō releases his zanpakutō.

Izuru Kira was born to a family of lesser nobility,[2] and his parents were dead since he was young.[3] While in the shinigami academy, Kira befriended Momo Hinamori, Renji Abarai, and Shūhei Hisagi, and they are often seen spending time together. Kira, along with Renji and Momo, would be sent to the 5th Division after graduation, and when Gin Ichimaru became captain of the 3rd Division, Kira was placed under Gin.[4] Kira is loyal to both his friends and his duties, perhaps to the point of fault. Despite the close friendship he shares with Momo Hinamori, Kira shows that his loyalty knows no boundaries when he defends his captain from Hinamori while she is in a grief-induced rage from her own captain's "death". Despite this, he calls himself a 'monster' afterwards for raising his sword against Hinamori.
Kira is first seen attempting to find, and later rescue, Renji, who leaves a lieutenant meeting to fight Ichigo Kurosaki. During Sōsuke Aizen's plot against Soul Society, Kira plays a role as a significant, yet also clueless, puppet, his loyalty and dedication to following orders used against him by Gin. Later on, Kira battles and loses to 10th Division lieutenant Rangiku Matsumoto, his weight-affecting zanpakutō rendered useless by her zanpakutō's ability to dissolve into ash. During the anime's Bount arc, Kira rescues Ichigo from the Bount Koga Gō, and later helps Ichigo fight his way into the Bount hideout. He is left to guard the entrance to the Seireitei following the successful infiltration by the Bount.
Kira's zanpakutō is Wabisuke (侘助, lit. miserable man, but can also be translated as apology, Viz: The Penitent One). Its shikai command is "raise your head" (面を上げろ, omote o agero?). When activated, Wabisuke's shikai bends the blade into a square hook. In this form, Wabisuke doubles the weight of whatever it strikes. The ability affects both inanimate objects and living beings. Though a seemingly pointless ability in sword combat, the effect is cumulative. With a second hit from Wabisuke, the weight will double again and so on, exponentially. Thus, after seven or eight blocked attacks, his opponents are unable to lift their own swords. Once Wabisuke's effect becomes noticeable, Kira's opponents often fall to their knees with their heads bent down, as if in apology, thus the name of Kira's zanpakutō.
4th Division
Captain
Retsu Unohana
Unohana is a soft-spoken, polite, and caring woman. She uses honorifics when addressing everyone, including her subordinates, and rarely shows panic or distress. In Soul Society arc, she healed everyone in the execution site after Ichigo saved Rukia. Unohana also seems to let her division members go on leave to the real world from time to time; in the anime she gives Hanatarō Yamada permission to take a break in the real world shortly after the events in Soul Society.
Recently, Unohana and Isane have appeared alongside captains Kenpachi Zaraki, Mayuri Kurotsuchi, and Byakuya Kuchiki in Las Noches, her appearance effectively stopping the Exequias leader from doing further harm to Yasutora Sado. She claims that she has come to Las Noches merely to heal the injured.
Retsu Unohana's zanpakutō is Minazuki (肉雫唼, lit. Purify the Flesh). In sealed form, Minazuki is slightly longer than ordinary katanas, and resembles a nodachi. Instead of tying it to her obi, Unohana carries her zanpakutō over her shoulder by a rope strap or lets Isane carry it for her. When unsealed, Minazuki transforms into a giant, flying, one-eyed manta-ray. It's large enough to transport many people on its back (at least a dozen, based on its size when compared to those riding it). Additionally, it can swallow even more people and transport them in its stomach, healing their injuries at the same time. When Unohana reseals Minazuki, it dissolves into green mist and reforms into the sheath of her zanpakutō. Bleach Advance: Kurenai ni Somaru Soul Society labels this form as Unohana's shikai.
Lt.
Isane Kotetsu
She is the lieutenant of the 4th Division, the medical and supply relief division, in Gotei 13 under Captain Retsu Unohana. Isane is the older sister of Kiyone Kotetsu, one of the two 3rd seats in the 13th Division. Unlike Kiyone, she is generally quiet and observant, though she shares her sister's sense of loyalty. She looks to Unohana as a mentor and mother figure. It is noted by Unohana that Isane suffers from frequent and recurring nightmares. This is sometimes used as material for jokes, as Isane's nightmares are often odd or whimsical in their contents. For example, she once had a nightmare involving fish cakes.[5]
Isane's zanpakutō is Itegumo (凍雲, lit. Frozen Cloud, Viz: Frozen Snow). Its shikai command is "sprint" (奔れ, hashire?, Viz: "run"). The guard is shaped like a snowflake. When its shikai is activated, two smaller blades protrude from Itegumo's hilt at 45° angles. She is never seen using it in combat, since the one time she activates it she is immediately knocked out by Ichigo.

7th Division
Captain
Sajin Komamura
Komamura is an extremely large character, the only larger human characters are the Seireitei gatekeepers, and is also quite unusual in that he is an anthropomorphic canine. He was initially very self-conscious about his appearance, after his fight with Kenpachi Zaraki (during which his helmet was destroyed) in midst of the invasion of Soul Society, he gained enough confidence to go without the helmet.
During the Soul Society arc, he fights Zaraki Kenpachi with Kaname Tōsen, while their subordinates fight Ikkaku and Yumichika. They couldn't defeat Kenpachi even when fighting together, and after Kenpachi defeats Tōsen's bankai, Komamura fights him with his own bankai, though Komamura did leave when he sensed Yamamoto was in danger. Because Tōsen fought for the justice that the Gotei 13 represented, he was very shocked when Tōsen chose to side with Sōsuke Aizen during his betrayal of Soul Society and felt that Tōsen had abandoned his morals. Komamura confronts Aizen but is quickly defeated. Komamura later decides to awaken his friend with his own hands.
Komamura's zanpakutō is Tenken (天譴, lit. Heaven's Sword, Viz: Sword of Heavenly Retribution). Its shikai command is "roar" (轟け, todoroke?). In its shikai, Tenken creates various body parts of a giant to copy whatever body part Komamura moves; for example, should Komamura swing his sword, a gigantic disembodied arm wielding a sword appears and does the same thing. Tenken's bankai, Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō (黒縄天譴明王, lit. Heavenly Punishment of Kokujō's King, Viz: Divine Retribution, Black Ropes of Ruination) brings forth the entire giant. Like in the shikai, the giant copies every movement made by Komamura.
Lt.
Tetsuzaemon Iba
Iba has a distinctive hair cut and wears black sunglasses with his standard shinigami uniform. He also smokes, thus somewhat resembling a typical yakuza gangster. He has a large tattoo on his back consisting of a cat on fire and the kanji 招福 (shōfuku, lit. inviting luck). Iba also seems to have recurring stomach problems, which he notes with shame on a few occasions. He and Ikkaku Madarame seem to have something of a working relationship, though it consists mainly of them dueling, drinking sake, then dueling again to see who has to get more.
Iba was originally from the 11th Division, but transferred to the 7th Division because getting promoted to lieutenant in the 11th Division was more difficult, if not impossible. It is later revealed that he wished to become a lieutenant not out of personal ambition, but for the sake of his mother. As a result, his former compatriots in the 11th Division look down upon him, as they deem the other divisions weaker than they are. In spite of this, he has a habit of hanging around their division's headquarters. Despite having left the 11th Division, it's clear he still enjoys a good fight, and during his duels with Ikkaku reveals a maniac grin much like his sparring partner.
Iba is well-rounded in both swordsmanship and kidō, only because it made becoming a lieutenant easier. The name and abilities of Iba's zanpakutō are unknown, as well as its shikai command. When sealed, it looks like a tantō, and he usually keeps it inside his shinigami uniform with the hilt sticking out. In its shikai, Iba's zanpakutō extends into a falchion or a large bladed scimitar with a pick-like protrusion a short distance below the tip of the sword. The only times he releases it is during his fight with Ikkaku and when he attempts to stop Jin Kariya, but the actual releases occur off-screen.
8th Division
Captain
Shunsui Kyōraku
Kyōraku is a laid back and flamboyant man, evident in his style of dress and general attitude. He wears a straw hat and a pink flowered haori over his captain's uniform. Although his haori and obi sash are cheap, his pinwheel hairpin is very expensive.[8] In his off time, he can be seen drinking sake and napping. Other times, he likes to chase after women, particularly his lieutenant, Nanao Ise, whom he calls 'my Nanao-chan' (little Nanao). Kyōraku tends to use a more familiar speech style than most other characters in Bleach. He generally refers to his fellow captains and shinigami by their first name followed by an honorific. Kyōraku is a peace-loving man who will always try to talk his way out of a fight, though he doesn't wish to insult opponents by refusing to fight. The slightly eccentric Kyōraku also seems to like making an impression on opponents.
Shunsui is the second son of the high-ranking noble Kyōraku family. Despite being of such old and prestigious lineage, he disliked studying and training, and because of his behavior was sent against his will to the Shin'ō Reijutsu Academy.[8] Although not much else is known about Kyōraku's history, it is implied that he and Jūshirō Ukitake are the oldest captains in the Gotei 13, with the exception of General Yamamoto. Along with Ukitake, he was the first to become captain as a result of training in Yamamoto's academy.[9] Kyōraku is the only character who dispenses with honorifics when addressing General Yamamoto, calling him old Yama (Yama-jī) He is close friends with Ukitake, with whom he works often. During Rukia Kuchiki's execution, Kyōraku follows Ukitake's example and helps prevent Rukia's death, showing he will help Ukitake with whatever decision he chooses, despite whatever consequences there are.
The true extent of Kyōraku's abilities has not been seen in the series, but he has been hinted to be quite strong, as General Yamamoto hints that Kyōraku, along with Ukitake and Yamamoto himself, are stronger than any other captain. Kyōraku's zanpakutō is Katen Kyōkotsu (花天狂骨, lit. Flower Heaven, Crazy Bone, Viz: Flower-Heaven Bone of Madness). His zanpakutō is unique in that it exists as two completely separate swords, existing as a daisho sword pair. Its shikai command is "flowers are disturbed, god of flowers weeps, winds of Heaven are disturbed, demon of Heaven laughs" (花風紊れて花神啼き天風紊れて天魔嗤う, hana kaze midarete, kashin naki, tenpū midarete, tenma warau?, Viz: "When the flower wind rages, the flower god roars. The wind of heaven rages, the god of the underworld sneers"). In Katen Kyōkotsu's shikai, the daisho sword pair transforms into two large scimitars or falchions. While the anime and manga have yet to depict what special abilities Katen Kyōkotsu possesses, some Bleach video games show it having the abilities of wind manipulation, with maple leaves or rose petals often seen flowing in the wind.
Lt.
Nanao Ise
Nanao Ise (伊勢 七緒, Ise Nanao?) is the lieutenant of the 8th Division of the Gotei 13, under Captain Shunsui Kyōraku, and vice-president of the Shinigami Women's Association. She is a very serious and pragmatic person who often puts up with her captain's silly antics, but like all lieutenants, she is extremely respectful of her captain and follows his instructions without hesitation. She is almost always carrying a heavy book. Nanao is often accosted by her captain, whose teasing takes various forms. Nanao's usual reaction is to scold him or hit him with something, usually a fan. When she is particularly annoyed she takes off her glasses, though her face has never been seen while doing so. Apparently this act is quite frightening, as most people who see it are reduced to gibbering wrecks just by witnessing it, even the sadistic cold hearted 12th division captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi fell victim to this intimidating spectacle.[10]
It is later revealed in Kubo's cliff notes on the sides of omake chapters that just like Momo Hinamori, Nanao is also a kidō master. Not much is known about Nanao's zanpakutō and she is very rarely seen with it. An illustration in the artbook "All Color but the Black" reveals that her zanpakutō takes the form of what appears to be either a wakizashi or tantō, which she seems to conceal within her sleeve. This is confirmed when just before Shunsui Kyōraku and Jūshirō Ukitake's fight with Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai, where she reaches in her sleeve only to be overwhelmed by Yamamoto's reiatsu.
9th Division
Former Captain
Kaname Tōsen
See under Bleach Characters *Bad Guy's*
Lt.
Shūhei Hisagi
Shūhei is an extremely mature and calm individual, a state that is slightly at odds with his somewhat punk-like appearance. He is used to taking responsibility, and tends to avoid violence when possible. He seems to be virtuous, much like his captain's image until the latter was revealed to be a traitor. He is often seen in the company of Renji and Kira, who along with Hinamori followed Shūhei as their senpai during their academy days, and appears to be from the lower class (according to omake chapters). Omake chapters also show that he is just as perverted as the other male shinigami. Shūhei has several tattoos — a number 69 on his face, as well as what appears to be a choker around his throat and a matching armband on his right arm. He is also seen with a bandage across his face and has three lines running vertically down the right side of his face, scars that resulted from an injury in the past when several huge hollows attacked a group of students (including Momo Hinamori, Izuru Kira, and Renji Abarai) he was leading into the living world for a lesson in fighting dummy hollows.
During the events of the arrancar arc, Shūhei is seen to have taken over the duties of his captain as an acting replacement. He comments to Jūshirō Ukitake that he never expected a captains' duty to be very difficult as Kaname Tōsen hardly asked anything of his subordinates. Ukitake later comments that Shūhei is still recovering from the fact that his captain was a traitor.
Very little is known about Shūhei's abilities, though it's known that even during his days in the academy he was quite skilled, commonly leading other shinigami trainees on mock missions. However, Izuru Kira mentions that Shūhei failed the entrance exam for the academy twice. His talent allowed him to become a seated officer in the Gotei 13 without having to pass additional tests. The name of Shūhei's zanpakutō has yet to be revealed. He never uses it in its unsealed state. In its sealed form, it looks like a regular katana with a circular tsuba. Shūhei has been seen carrying his zanpakutō both at his waist and on his back.
